Geographic Information

The district's borders are delimited by the Capilano River at its eastern border, Howe Sound to the west, Cypress Provincial Park to the north and English Bay to the south. Some area neighbourhoods include Caulfield, Dundarave and Horseshoe Bay.

Zoning and Architecture

West Vancouver is zoned exclusively for residential building with some commercial retail. Housing options range from beautifully-appointed mansions of the British Properties, the ocean view condos near Ambleside Park and charming cottage-style bungalows and single family homes that predominate the district.

Shops, Services and Leisure


There are a few shopping districts in West Vancouver. The ample Park Royal complex serves an upscale clientele, and has recently added the lively "Village at Park Royal," which features gourmet dining and shopping. The boutiques and restaurants lining Marine Drive have contributed to Dundarave's pleasant character for decades. The Caulfield Shopping Centre near the Upper Levels Highway provides a basic "one-stop shopping" experience, servicing the Caulfield-Cypress Park neighbourhood.

Parks and Recreation

West Vancouver has many beaches and waterfront parkland. The city's heart is Ambleside Park, with its multiple sports fields, picnic areas, swimming beaches, and dog park. Hikers and cyclists enjoy day-tripping to the sublimely beautiful old-growth enclaves of Lighthouse Park, Whytecliffe Park, or Bowen Island. Superb skiing and snowboarding is right in West Van's back yard at Cypress Bowl, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics' freestyle sking and snowboard venue. The new Aquatic Centre is housed in an ultramodern sustainable building, features family rooms and has numerous programs, from infants to seniors.

Transportation

West Vancouver is served by its own Blue Bus Transit system, which integrates service with The Greater Vancouver Transit Authority. With wide, traffic calmed Marine Drive and bike carrier-equipped buses, it s easy to get around without a car. Taking a bike on the Bowen Island (or any) ferry makes for a fun and economical day trip. The Upper Levels Highway (Hwy 1) provides an east-west route. It ends in the BC Ferries terminus in Horseshoe Bay, accessing Vancouver Island, the Northern Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. It also splits off into the Sea-to-Sky Highway, providing access to Lion's Bay, Squamish and Whistler Mountain Resort, one of the 2010 Olympics' main venues.
